International 14 US Class

Hi everyone, I wanted to introduce myself. My name is Jimmy, I live on the south shore of long island. With my first I 14 just a day away from her new home I'm asking the community for some help. I have extensive sailing experience but have never sailed a 14 ever. I could really use some tips, tricks, and advice on getting started. besides the obvious, keep the smooth side down, and expect to swim.....alot, any advice would be very appreciated.

Thanks,

Jimmy Ranker

P.S. the boat design is a Pawlick 1, built in 1997. It currently has a broken rig (if any body is selling a new rules carbon rig let me know) Other than that i don't know much about this particular boat so if anyone has info on that i could use it as well.

Welcome Jimmy.  Sounds like you have the right expectations.  There used to be a wiki on the international site that had lots of advice on boat handling. Maybe somebody here can find that again? I think the Seattle fleet has a site with some boat handling advice as well.  Can't find it right now though.  I was a noob not too long ago, so learning to sail these things is still fresh in my mind.  I'm still a noob when it comes to big breeze.  I will give a few things for you to think about:

Keep the boat flat and fast.  Don't tack or gybe when going slow.  Don't start a tack or gybe when heeled.  There are some exceptions and subtleties, but these two things should keep you out of most trouble.

Oh, and healing to windward helps with bear-aways, especially in tight places like leaving the dock.

When sailing deeper than a beam reach keep your weight in the same place and steer for balance.

In good breeze, a survival technique is to sail deep, then sail close hauled (or vice versa) to avoid beam reaching, which is difficult.

I don't want to fill your head with too much stuff, so I'll stop now.
